What is a monofilament wig?

If you’re new to wigs, you’ve probably seen the term “monofilament” somewhere and scratched your head. It’s totally okay. There’s a lot to learn about wigs, but we’re here to help.

Monofilament wigs have a cap or sections that are made of a fine mesh material that resembles the scalp. Hair fibers are individually sewn or tied to the mesh, giving the appearance of natural hair growing out of your head. The hair can then move freely and naturally in any direction. As you can imagine, this is a long, intricate process and cannot be done by machine. But the results are truly impressive.

Monofilament wigs adapt particularly well to the shape of the head, give hold and volume to the root, are easy to comb and allow the scalp to breathe. Monofilament wigs can be styled like natural hair due to the construction. But you have to be extremely careful so you don’t damage the mesh.

Monofilament cap wigs give a 100% natural appearance and absolute comfort. The hair can be combed or parted in any direction, giving the wig a very realistic look. These wigs are smooth against the scalp and good for those dealing with moderate to severe hair loss. Furthermore, monofilament wigs are ideal for those who have any health conditions or medical treatments that affect the scalp (chemotherapy, radiotherapy or chronic alopecia for other reasons), hair loss, brittleness, etc. This extra comfort is particularly appreciated during summer or in case of high heat.

Keep in mind that with great craftsmanship comes a higher price tag. You’re going to pay a little more for these wigs because of the amount of work that goes into making them. But if you want realism, natural movement and comfortable wear, monofilament wigs are the way to go. And if you are careful with your wigs, a monofilament wig could last a long time.
